Smooth Fox Terriers have been around for more years than one cares to remember. There are not many people who haven't had knowledge of these little dogs in their family and if not they knew someone who did. The Smooth is a genuine British breed and was evolved by clever breeders of the past who knew what they wanted in a dog: a game, fearless, hardy workmanlike terrier. Intelligent, active with an exceedingly good memory and quick enough to catch rats and other vermin above ground, whilst small enough to go to ground, all combined with being a very good looker. The result is the Smooth terrier as we know him today and it is worth noting that little has changed about either his character or his looks throughout the years. He has been described as "the gentleman" of the canine race and he lives up to his reputation, both as a worker, hunter, or a family pet.

Smooths are an ideal family dog, being a "what you will" dog: a man's or woman's dog and are excellent with children, as long as, like any breed of dog, they are not teased. As it is, children find them to be great fun companions, as they are easy to teach tricks. As part of the family you will find them devoted, affectionate and loveable. They become very attached to you and yours and willing to travel with you trouble free wherever and however you want to go. The Smooth makes a wonderful house-dog, they are a small to medium dog that has a bark as big as their hearts. They are courageous and protective of their people, always quick to let you know strangers are about. At the same time they will give your bona fide visitors a friendly welcome.

Like all breeds of dogs the Smooth must have regular exercise to keep him fit and trim, both physically and mentally. They are an active breed and very much like a good walk. It is best to keep these little guys on a leash in public places as their special interest is chasing anything that will run. Chase is the best game…

Smooths are natural born gardeners and will enjoy helping you dig, especially when you are planting your garden, vegetables or flowers. As soon as your plants are in the ground your Smooth can take them out again and give them back to you, or better yet, run around for a game of chase. If a garden is your passion, perhaps a Smooth is not.
